Pre-PR Reflections

When I think of public relations I think of marketing something of someone. As i learned in previous classes marketing is made up of price, product, place and in my opinion most importantly promotion.

Price determines to some extent how much of the product is bought and also made. If the consumers think the prices are to high than the item will not be bought. On the other hand if the producers lower the price to below what it cost to make the product than they would lose money and go out of business.

Product is a big factor of marketing due to the fact it determines everything else. Can’t determine a price for the product, a price, or any type of promotional plan without the product itself. It will determine your target audience, and how you advertise the product.

Place, although important, I believe in this day in age is the least important. The only reason why I say that is because of how much online shopping has grown in the past ten years. Even on Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year, in store sales have greatly decreased. Every year I participate in Black Friday and the lines keep getting shorter and shorter. People would much rather purchase items online because there are still amazing sales even though you could get it in the store for a little bit cheaper. Still a big part of marketing just not the most important in my opinion.

Last and surly not least, promotion. “This is were the magic happens”. Maybe this is my favorite part of the marketing process because it’s what I want to do in the future. I love thinking of a way to trigger the consumers thoughts. What will make them want to buy this product? What purpose does it serve? How do I keep the consumer interested in the advertisement. There was a servery taken last year that said we see on average around five hundred to about a thousand ads a day. We only retain about five to ten of those. Whether they don’t interest us as a consumer, or the ads just isn’t interesting at all. So you have the product, you have at least some idea where to want to sell the product, and you have the price of the product. Then the promotions team decides how it wants to advertise the product. Whether it’s sponsorship, digital marketing, packaging, etc.

According to our textbook “Think Public Relations”, there are a variety of definitions for public relations. Some of the the keys that were said were deliberate, planned, performance, public interest, Two-way communication, strategic management of competition and conflict.

Public relations is a process and in the text book given the acronym R.A.C.E. Which stands for Research, Action, Communication, Evaluation. What is the problem or situation? Whether it’s with the product or the marketing plan, etc. Action, after figuring out the problem then determining a plan or action to fix or alter the problem into a positive outcome. Communication, how will you deliver the message you to public. Though social media, TV, newspaper, blogs, etc. Lastly, Evaluation. Did you reach the target audience? And if so was it the effect you wanted?

After reading the first chapter of the text book it has expanded my view of public relations. Rather than just looking at marketing as public relations I now have learned the process of public relations or R.A.C.E.

Social Media Management

I have recently been following social media more closely considering its one of the best ways to advertise and one of the cheapest. More often than not the ‘target audience’ has some sort of social media. I focused on Twitter this week, in class we were introduced to TweetDeck.

This website allows you to schedule tweets to be posted. Whether its to post at the time the most people are on their social media such as 12 pm, which would be lunch time. This will be a very useful tool in the future!

Google Certification

This week one of our assignments was to go through the steps of getting our website certified through Google. It took a while to complete but ultimately will make me a better blogger. It was filled with a lot of good information and recommend that everyone that has a blog goes through the process.

Here are my results on the Final Assessment.

Future of my Blog

One of my last my assignments to write about if I will keep my blog or not. I will absolutely keep my blog updated. I can keep my viewers updated. There really isn’t any cons to keeping my blog but multiple Pros. It will pull a greater audience, and more people will tune in, I will start to link my blog to my YouTube post. As more people tune into my blog that will help me obtain employment, because it will help me go viral. I look forward to continuing this blog in the future.

Networking Event #1

A couple weeks back I attended the “Student to Professional Conference”. This was a conference hosted by GVSU, business professionals from all around Grand Rapids. There were many insightful tips. They gave great tips on how to advertise yourself through social media such as Linkdhin, Facebook, etc.

I would recommend that everyone attend this event. There was a professional photographer taking head shots for people, and there was also a Q and A. They sat on a stage and anwsered questions for about an hour. If you have any business questions come out next time!

(Plus there was free food) 😀

Business Card

We were assigned to a make business card this week. Which was a bit challenging for me, I thought it would be easy but the more I thought about it I don’t have a formal job or ever will.

So I had to come up with something that was semi-formal along with told me job title  and skill set. Although it’s not your traditional business card, it will work well for the people I will be handing it to. It’s not flashy and has a simple background to not overpower the information. I wont be business cards as much as other people but overall I’m still glad I was able to make one.

Brand Yourself

Earlier this week we were assigned to make and use a profile on Brandyourself.com. This site allows to see what other people see when they are searching for your name or website. Some of the results were shocking, if you had and old pictures you post they come up along with some other people with the same name and even addresses. I had three out of ten results pop up that were actually me or that I wanted people to see. Three out of ten isn’t the best number, but that’s why it was such a useful tool. I was able to say it wasn’t me or that it was a negative thing about me and now to my knowledge it will be ignored in the future.

Name Plate

This week one of our assignments was to make a name plate. For this particular assignment I used About.me. The website was user friendly and pretty straightforward.  It allows you to pick multiple areas you enjoy along with some background info; such as where you are from.

Furthermore it allows you to add five hashtags to the name plate. This could be very useful if used correctly. If that’s not enough it also allows you to link all of your social media to the same page, this way people can see your tweets, Instagram and what videos you have upload most recently.

Overcoming Fear (SEO)

This week we researched search engine optimization using Google Ads Keyword Tool. Our assignment was to pick five keywords that would promote our blog with and then compare them to what Google would suggest. The results were kind of shocking.

As any person would think the keywords Google would suggest would be words or concepts talked about in the blog. This however was not the case. The top five suggested words all had to do with free online templates and free online websites. Which begs to question if Word Press does this on purpose, it would make sense from a business standpoint. More websites made equals more free advertising for them.

The keywords/phrases I chose where: Fear, Overcoming fear, Free climbing, Adrenaline Rush, Young and Dangerous. I chose fear simply because that is what the whole blog is based on. Overcoming fear, my goal of helping people overcome fear and looking at the bigger picture. Free climbing, one of the bold ways I attempt to show people that fear is a choice. Adrenaline Rush, many people get a adrenaline rush just watching the videos I make so I thought this would get a lot of hits. Young and Dangerous, one of the many phrases free climbers tag themselves in. So just logically thinking, if people are looking for free climbing videos or just something that’s crazy.

Overall, this could make or break a blog. I also wonder if Google does that if you get the paid version of Word Press. But I guess if you don’t make it through the terms and agreement section you’ll never know.
